Edge School to Host Oilers & Royals in Exhibition Play

Edge School to Host Oilers & Royals in Exhibition Play

For the past few hockey seasons or so Edge School has sent many of its finest Alumni and current students to don the colours of the Calgary Royals or Okotoks Oilers, fabled squads in the highly competitive Alberta Junior Hockey League.  And now for the first time ever, Edge School will be hosting its maiden AJHL game this coming Friday, September 4th at the Kyle Stuart Memorial Arena, located on Edge’s new campus just off the TransCanada Highway (Calaway Park exit), featuring these same two teams.

Edge’s legacy in the storied AJHL is indeed rich.  Edge last names within the AJHL ranks, both past and present, include Bertram, the Hamilton boys, Kroshus and Colborne in Camrose; Curtis LeinweberJustin Daigle, David Civitarese and Nathan Brummitt in Okotoks; Stachiw, Stern, Adair, Auger, Carpenter, Thompson, Dielwart, Boswelland Hilton with the Royals; Farrer and Dunbar with the Canucks; MacMillan,Stachiw and Eskesen in Drayton Valley; Helfrich, Lake and Cormier (also Royals) in Fort Mac; Wong in Olds; Moir and Stuart in Drumheller; Markiewicz in Brooks; and now the Stachiw brothers in Canmore; Milnthorp in Grand Prairie; and Beisel with the Royals and many others – AJHL line-ups have certainly felt the positive impact of the small independent but prolific Edge School!

Many of these Edgers have moved on to the post-secondary ranks, some onto the pros and some are making their AJHL debuts!

This September 4th exhibition tilt provides Edge with the opportunity to both thank the AJHL and its member clubs and to showcase great local talent.  It also provides the Royals and the Oilers an opportunity to fine-tune their rosters a mere week before the opening games of the 2009-10 AJHL season.

Ryan Bartoshyk, AJHL’s VP Marketing, is keenly aware of the importance of hosting an AJHL game at Edge’s new facilities. “A distinct synergy exists between the Edge School and the AJHL; both combine excellence and academics to allow student athletes to achieve their goals while delivering a platform for success. We are proud to showcase our athletes at the Edge School and look forward to working with the Edge School in the future”.

Edge Athletic Director Jason Kerswill is also excited about this opportunity. “This is a wonderful chance for the AJHL to find some new fans both within Edge and within the wider communities of Cochrane, Springbank and Calgary west. Teams throughout the AJHL have become home for many of our Edge hockey players as they take the next step in their hockey careers.  We look forward to continuing this strong relationship in the coming seasons.”

Come out and cheer on these local heroes!

Puck drop is at 7pm, admission is free and the coffee will be hot!

Come join us for great AJHL action.
