Oilers outscore Canucks for a 8 to 5 win.

Jumping out to a huge lead is not always a good thing as the Okotoks Oilers have shown on numerous occasions this season.

On Friday night it was a 4 to 0 lead the Oilers were up just past the half way mark of the first period but the Calgary Canucks kept coming back to throw a scare into the Oilers. Okotoks eventually pulled away with a 8 to 5 win in front of 1085 excited fans at the Okotoks Centennial Arena.

Scoring for the Oilers were Jeff Barrett, John McInnis with 3, Jonathan Turk, Chris Korpach with a pair, and Chris Duszynski

The Oilers once again came out of the gate flying and jumped into a 4 to 0 lead. Jeff Barrett started the onslaught at 3:46 on a nifty give and go with Chris Duszynski for his 14th. goal of the year. The red hot John McInnis scores his first of 3 on the night shorthanded at 9:51 on a backhand through the five hole of Canucks netminder Dusty Nickel. A quick goal off the faceoff by Jonathan Turk at 11:36 puts the Oilers ahead 3 to 0 and then at 12:53 Chris Korpach scores his 14th of the year. The Canucks get on the scoreboard on the powerplay at 15:18 by a goal from John Baird before Chris Duszynski scores his 30th. of the season on a steal and goes in alone and scores on his backhand. The Canucks Marc Zanoni rounded out the scoring at 18:57 and a busy goal scoring period comes to an end with the Oilers up 5 to 2. The Canucks outshoot the Oilers 15 to 11 in the period.

The second period produces only one goal and it is the Calgary Canucks leading scorer John Dunbar beating Oilers goalie Michael Matyas at 19:08 on the powerplay to bring them to within 2 of the Oilers at 5 to 3. The Oilers hit the post midway through the period and fail to score on their 2 late powerplay opportunities. The Canucks get 19 shots on goal and are coming on strong.

The Calgary Canucks put a little worry into the Oiler fans when they scored early in the third period. At 4:46, defenseman Kevin Mills scores on a great individual effort to make it a 5 to 4 game. Oilers John McInnis restores the Oilers 2 goal lead at 7:12 with a powerplay goal but just 54 seconds later, John Baird scores his second of the night to keep the Canucks within striking distance at 6 to 5. At 15:04, it is Oilers Chris Korpach that deflates the Canucks bubble when he scores a shorthanded goal, his second goal of the game to put the Oilers up 7 to 5. John McInnis completes his hat trick into the empty net at 19:33 for a 8 to 5 Oilers win. Canucks once again outshoot the Oilers 11 to 6 in the period.
