The second place Okotoks Oilers played the third place Olds Grizzlys on Friday night at the Olds Sportsplex. The teams had split 4 games this season, each winning 2 games prior to Friday night but it was the Oilers that came out victorious in OT by a score of 3 to 2.
Scoring for the Oilers were Jeff Barrett, Justin Cochrane and John McInnis with the winner in OT.
The Oilers score the only goal of the first period. At 8:08, right after Oilers goalie Sean Cahill makes a great leg save. Rodwell barrels down the right side and cuts in to the middle and his shot ends up in a scrum that finds it way to the stick of Jeff Barrett who scores his 8th. goal of the year. The Grizzlys have a slightly better period than the Oilers, but the penalty killers did a good job killing off 2 short handed situations. Olds outshoot Okotoks 13 to 8.
The Oilers have a good second period and score a powerplay goal at 8:03 of the period. A perfect hard shot/pass from the left point by Quinn Sproule to the stick of a waiting Justin Cochrane who just had to redirect the puck past Olds goalie Marc Boulanger puts the Oilers up 2-0. A shorthanded goal at 15:42 by Olds is the result of Cahill passing the puck from behind his net up the right boards, but gets intercepted by Grizzly Nicholas Bourgeois who sends it over to Jordan Kwas and the Olds Grizzlys are within one of the Oilers. Period ends Oilers 2 , Grizzlys 1. Olds outshoot the Oilers 14 to 9.
The Olds Grizzlys tie the game at 4:04 of the third period on a powerplay when forward Sean Neumeier deflects a Frank Carbonaro shot past Cahill for his 12th. goal of the year. The Oilers put the pressure on Olds and have a couple of great scoring chances but there are no more goals and the game goes into overtime tied at 2. Olds outshoot the Oilers 12 to 11 in the period.
Oiler John McInnis scores the winning goal at 3:05 of the first overtime through the five hole of Olds goaltender Marc Boulanger from Brandon Hoogenboom and Jordan Principalli for a 3 to 2 Oiler win.
Game Notes; Scratches for the Oilers were James Bannister, Matt Strong and Kyle Reynolds. Cody Dion came off the ice late in the first period favoring his leg, and did not return. Gamestar for Okotoks was Sean Cahill. Shots on goal ended up 40 to 33 for the Grizzlys.
