The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) has invited four RBC Olympic Torchbearers to drop the puck at their local AJHL games, building the Olympic Spirit in the community in advance of the Olympic Torch Relay.
RBC Olympic Torchbearers will drop the puck at the following games:
Lloydminster Bobcats @ Drumheller Dragons on Wednesday, Jan. 6
Drayton Valley Thunder @ Camrose Kodiaks on Friday, Jan. 8
Ft.McMurray Oil Barons @ Sherwood Park Crusaders on Friday, Jan. 8
Canmore Eagles @ Okotoks Oilers on Friday, Jan. 15
The Olympic torch will travel through Okotoks on Jan. 18 as it makes its way to Vancouver for the Olympic Winter Games starting on Feb. 12.
The torch will travel through the heart of Okotoks and make a short stop at the Okotoks Recreation Centre on the 81st day of the Canada-wide relay. The day’s events will feature a major community celebration in High River with musical performances and a few surprises still to be announced.
Okotoks Mayor Bill McAlpine said it’s an opportunity for Okotoks to share in the Olympic experience.
“It’s fun, we’re certainly looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s exciting we were able to get them off the main highway to come here.”
The torch is expected to arrive in Okotoks at 2:20 p.m. The torch will arrive in town from High River on Highway 2A and will travel along Southridge Drive before turning right onto Elizabeth Street. Torchbearers will travel through downtown Okotoks, turn north onto Crystal Ridge Drive, and then left on Milligan Drive to the recreation centre. From the recreation centre, runners will continue traveling north to Calgary. The torch will make a short pit stop at the recreation centre to give runners and those involved in the caravan a short break, but no events are planned.
“As a longstanding AJHL partner, RBC is an important partner in building strong communities and we are looking forward to having our student athletes, fans and supporters capture the Olympic Spirit through this tremendous opportunity,” says Ryan Bartoshyk, VP Marketing of the AJHL.
RBC Olympic Torchbearers were randomly chosen by entering the RBC create a Better Canada contest. Canadians made an online pledge to create better unities. Big or small, everything we do makes a difference and together we can create a better Canada, community by community.
